2019 Federal Cabinet Shuffle – TSA Reports Key Items

Moments ago, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new cabinet roles for five Members of his Government. This pre-election cabinet shuffle was triggered by the sudden resignation from Cabinet of long-time Nova Scotia M.P., Scott Brison. The Cabinet Ministers were sworn in at Rideau Hall at a ceremony presided by the Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette.

Shuffled and New Ministers

Jane Philpott, M.P. for Markham-Stouffville (Ontario), has been promoted to the role of President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Digital Government. The first-term M.P. most recently served at the Minister of Indigenous Services and was the Minister of Health prior to that.

Seamus O’Regan, M.P. for St. John’s South—Mount Pearl (Newfoundland), will serve as the new Minister of Indigenous Services. Elected in the 2015 General Election, this is O’Regan’s second cabinet portfolio since August 2017 when he was appointed Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence. 

Jody Wilson-Raybould, M.P. for Vancouver Granville (British Columbia), has been moved and becomes the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence. A first-term M.P., she had served as the Attorney General since 2015.

David Lametti, M.P. for LaSalle—Émard—Verdun (Quebec), has been elevated to Cabinet, he will serve as the new Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. Lametti is a first term M.P., and most recently served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development. 

Bernadette Jordan, M.P. for South Shore—St. Margarets (Nova Scotia), has been promoted to Cabinet as the new Minister of Rural Economic Development. Jordan was elected in the 2015 election, and will be the voice of Nova Scotia at the Cabinet table. Prior to today, Jordan was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Democratic Institutions. Immediately after being elected, she was selected by the Atlantic Liberal M.P.s to serve as Chair of the Atlantic Liberal Caucus. Expect a full analysis from TSA on today’s Cabinet Shuffle.
